Maurten Solid C 160 Energy Bar

Sometimes you just want something to chew on during a long ride. Not a gel, not a drink, but a real energy bar that's easy to take with you. The Maurten Solid C 160 is exactly that: a compact bar made from oats, rice, and cocoa, with 40 grams of carbohydrates. Designed for runners, cyclists, and triathletes who want to supplement their fuel plan with solid food.

What's in this bar

The ingredient list is short: oats, rice, and cocoa. That's it. Oats provide slower carbohydrates, rice provides more quickly available sugars; together they offer a broad carbohydrate profile. The cocoa isn't just for taste: the C in the name indicates a flavor change. After hours of sweet gels and drinks, everything eventually tastes the same; a cocoa bite breaks that pattern. Note: oat beta-glucan can lower cholesterol. High cholesterol is a risk factor for developing coronary heart disease.

40 grams of carbohydrates and the modular system

One bar contains 40 grams of carbohydrates, the same amount as the Maurten Gel 160 and Drink Mix 160. In practice, this makes calculating your intake very simple: one bar = 40 grams, half a bar (via the pre-cut line) = 20 grams. The common recommendation for endurance is 30 to 60 grams per hour, up to 90 for very long sessions. Carbohydrates contribute to the recovery of normal muscle function after highly intense and/or prolonged exercise leading to muscle fatigue and depletion of glycogen stores, making this bar also interesting immediately after exercise.

When a bar works better than a gel

Liquid or semi-liquid food is absorbed faster. But faster isn't always better. On slower miles on the bike, a long easy-paced ride, or the cycling part of a triathlon, you have time to chew. Solid food passes through the stomach more slowly: a more gradual energy supply, and less of a brutal sugar spike. Always combine the bar with water, which significantly improves the digestion of solid carbohydrates during exercise. And test it in training first.

Carbohydrates and your brain on the road

Why the Maurten Solid 160?

40g Carbohydrates per Bar, Separable into Two Halves

Each bar contains exactly 40 grams of carbohydrates. Using the pre-scored line, you can break it into two equal 20-gram halves. No on-the-go calculations, just pre-portioned servings.

Modular system with Gel 160 and Drink Mix 160

Solid C 160 provides the same 40 grams of carbohydrates as Maurten Gel 160 and Drink Mix 160. Combining them becomes simple: half a bar with a gel, or a whole bar with a sports drink.

Oats, rice and cocoa, nothing more

The list is short. Oats provide slower carbohydrates, rice provides faster-acting sugars; together, they offer a broad carbohydrate profile. Without a long list of additives or artificial flavors.

Cocoa flavour to break the monotony

The C in the name is not insignificant. After hours of sweet gels and drinks, everything eventually tastes the same. The cocoa flavour breaks this pattern – valuable when taste fatigue sets in on a long outing or a marathon.

Zusammensetzung

* Prozentsatz der Referenzaufnahme gemäß Verordnung (EU) Nr. 1169/2011.

Ingredients:
Oats, rice, cocoa. The exact quantities per ingredient and per bar are not indicated on the label by the manufacturer.
Recommended use:
Use before, during, or after endurance exercise. Eat the whole bar for 40g of carbohydrates, or break it along the pre-cut line for 20g per half. Always combine with sufficient water for proper digestion.
Storage advice:
Store at room temperature, between 10 and 30 °C. Tins are delivered with a minimum shelf life of four months.
Safety:

Consume the bar in small portions with water. Use with caution if you have a sensitive stomach or experience nausea during exercise.

Health claims

  • Oat beta-glucan: Oat beta-glucan contributes to the reduction of blood cholesterol. High cholesterol is a risk factor in the development of coronary heart disease.
  • Oat and barley beta-glucans: Oat and barley beta-glucans, as part of a meal, contribute to the reduction of the blood glucose increase after that meal.
  • Carbohydrates: Carbohydrates contribute to the maintenance of normal brain function.
  • Carbohydrates: Carbohydrates contribute to the recovery of normal muscle function (contraction) after highly intensive and/or long-lasting physical exercise leading to muscle fatigue and the depletion of glycogen stores in skeletal muscle.

Frequently Asked Questions

When to eat an energy bar while running or cycling?

During quieter or moderate intensity sections, when you have time to chew: the first hours of a long outing, a flat cycling stage, the cycling part of a triathlon. At high intensity, a gel or drink is more practical. Simple rule: if you can still chew and swallow comfortably, a bar is suitable.

How many carbohydrates per hour during endurance exercise?

The current recommendation is 30 to 60 grams per hour, up to 90 grams beyond two to three hours with a well-trained gut. A Solid C 160 provides 40 grams, half a bar 20 grams. Easy to combine with a gel or sports drink.

Is an energy bar easy to digest during exercise?

That depends on the intensity. At low to moderate intensity, most people tolerate solid food well, especially with water. At high intensity or under competition stress, it passes through the stomach more slowly, which can cause issues for some. Therefore, test the bar during training first.

Twelve bars, isn't that a small amount for the price?

Each bar provides 40 grams of carbohydrates and is divided into two equal halves. In half-bars, you effectively get 24 servings of 20 grams. It is also a product specifically designed for sports, to be used around training sessions and competitions.

Why does solid food provide energy more slowly than a gel?

Because of gastric emptying. A gel is already semi-liquid and passes through the stomach quite quickly. A bar must first be chewed and broken down before the carbohydrates reach the intestine. This takes longer, but the supply is more gradual, with less sudden sugar spikes. Solid food is therefore suitable for times when you are not at maximum intensity.

Difference between Solid C 160 and Gel 160?

Both provide exactly 40 grams of carbohydrates. The difference is the form. The Gel 160 is semi-liquid, no chewing required, so it's absorbed faster and suitable for high-intensity efforts. The Solid C 160 is a chewable bar made from oats, rice, and cocoa: this solid texture serves as a "reset" after hours of gels. Many combine the two: bars during calmer phases, gels when the pace picks up.
