Maurten Solid 160

Imagine: you're halfway through a long bike ride or preparing for a marathon. You need fuel, but a gel isn't always appealing. Sometimes you just want something to chew. That's why the Maurten energy bar was designed. The Solid 160 is a compact oat and rice-based bar that provides 40 grams of carbohydrates per bar. Simple, effective, and easy to carry in a back pocket.

What this bar contains and why

The ingredient list is short. Fructose-glucose syrup, oat flakes, and maltodextrin form the base, supplemented with rice flour, a little sugar, and sunflower oil. The combination of several carbohydrate sources is deliberate: fructose and glucose use different transport pathways in the intestine. This allows your body to absorb more carbohydrates per hour than with a single sugar source. Each bar provides 40 grams of carbohydrates, exactly the same as the Maurten Gel 160 or Drink Mix 160, which simplifies calculations.

Cut in half for flexible intake

The bar is pre-cut in the middle. You can easily break it into two equal halves of 20 grams of carbohydrates each. This may seem like a minor detail, but it matters on the go. On a leisurely two-hour ride, you might have half a bar per hour. On race day, you combine a whole bar with a gel or sports drink to get close to 60 to 90 grams of carbohydrates per hour.

When a bar works better than a gel

A gel is fast, liquid, and effective at high intensity. But not everyone tolerates hours of gels straight; the stomach sometimes demands something solid. A carbohydrate bar like the Solid 160 offers chewable fuel and therefore a change of texture. Especially during long efforts at moderate intensity, solid food is often easier to tolerate than one might think. It's all about timing: at a calmer pace, the stomach has more leeway. Just before the finish line at full intensity, prefer a gel.

Maurten's modular approach

Maurten has designed all its products to provide the same amount of carbohydrates per serving: 40 grams. Gel, powder sachet, or this energy bar, you know exactly what you're taking in. For runners and cyclists who seriously plan their nutrition, this is a real plus. One bar = 40 grams. Half a bar = 20 grams. That's it. This simplicity is the very idea of the modular system.

Why Maurten Solid 160?

40 Grams of Carbohydrates Per Bar, Like the Gel and Drink Mix

Each bar provides exactly 40 grams of carbohydrates, the same amount as Maurten Gel 160 and Drink Mix 160. This allows you to effortlessly alternate between solid and liquid fuel without recalculating.

Fructose and glucose via two transport pathways

The bar combines fructose-glucose syrup, maltodextrin and other carbohydrate sources. Since fructose and glucose are absorbed via different pathways, your body can assimilate more carbohydrates per hour than with a single source.

Pre-cut into two 20-gram halves

The bar is pre-cut in the middle and breaks into two equal pieces of 20 grams of carbohydrates each. Practical for half a bar during training or for precise carbohydrate intake.

Short ingredient list, without unnecessary additions

Oat flakes, rice flour, fructose-glucose syrup, maltodextrin and a little sunflower oil: that's the essential. No long list of colorings, flavorings or preservatives.

Frequently Asked Questions

When to eat an energy bar during exercise?

The best time depends on your rhythm. During long efforts at moderate intensity, the stomach digests solid food well: preferably eat the bar during calmer phases. At high intensity just before the finish, a gel or sports drink is often more practical.

Is an energy bar better than a gel?

Not necessarily better, but different. A bar offers something to chew on, which is pleasant as an alternative after several gels. Solid food slows down gastric emptying a bit; at very high intensity, a gel is therefore more quickly available. Many combine the two.

How many carbohydrates per hour during endurance exercise?

The common recommendation is 30 to 60 grams of carbohydrates per hour, up to 90 grams for efforts lasting more than two to three hours. A Solid 160 bar provides 40 grams; for 60 to 80 grams per hour, combine it with a gel or sports drink. The half-bar of 20 grams is practical for spreading smaller portions.

Why this bar rather than a supermarket cereal bar?

An ordinary cereal bar is not designed to be consumed during exercise. The Solid 160 deliberately combines fructose and glucose, two sugars absorbed through different pathways, which allows for more carbohydrate assimilation per hour. It is also compact, pre-cut, and precisely dosed at 40 grams of carbohydrates.

Why both fructose and glucose?

Fructose and glucose each use a different transport system in the intestine. With only one type of sugar, this system eventually saturates. By combining the two, you utilize two pathways at once and absorb more carbohydrates per hour. This principle, called dual transport, explains why modern sports nutrition almost always mixes multiple carbohydrate sources.

What is the difference between Solid 160, Gel 160, and Drink Mix 160?

All three provide exactly 40 grams of carbohydrates per serving. The difference lies in their form: Solid 160 is a chewable bar made from oats and rice, ideal for moderate intensity; Gel 160 is liquid and absorbed faster; Drink Mix 160 dissolves in water. Since they all provide 40 grams, you can alternate them without recalculating.
