SiS Beta Fuel Gel Neutral

A flavourless gel: no fruit smell, no fruit colour, just the gel. The SiS Beta Fuel Gel Neutral provides 40 grams of carbohydrates per 60 ml in a 1:0.8 maltodextrin to fructose ratio, with no added flavour. Designed for athletes who, during long sessions, no longer want fruity flavours and prefer a neutral alternative. Gluten-free, suitable for vegans, certified by Informed Sport.

Why a flavourless gel exists

During a four, five or six-hour effort, taste becomes a factor. Strawberry, orange, lime: after ten gels in a day, it can become tiresome and prevent you from continuing to eat when you need to. Flavour fatigue is a well-known problem in ultra-endurance, long-distance triathlon and long bike rides. The neutral variant remedies this. You take it, you squeeze it, it's done. No flavour to react to.

Why 40 grams and not 22 grams

The standard SiS energy gel, GO Isotonic, provides 22 grams of carbohydrates per 60 ml. The Beta Fuel Gel provides 40 in the same 60 ml, from two sources in a 1:0.8 maltodextrin to fructose ratio. For an effort lasting more than two hours, 80 to 120 grams of carbohydrates per hour are needed to maintain glycogen stores. Two Beta Fuel Gels per hour are sufficient for this. With the GO Isotonic gel, almost four would be needed to achieve the same result.

Two transport pathways, increased efficiency

Maltodextrin is absorbed in the intestine via the SGLT1 transporter and goes directly to the muscles as rapidly available glucose. Fructose takes another pathway via GLUT5 and is processed by the liver. This liver, in turn, delivers glucose into the bloodstream, which contributes to a slightly more stable energy level over a longer period. With a 2:1 ratio, SGLT1 quickly saturates. The 1:0.8 ratio better distributes the load, increasing total oxidation efficiency from 62% to 74%, as demonstrated in a comparative study.

It contains sodium, unlike the Beta Fuel sachet

The Beta Fuel 80 powder sachet does not contain sodium. The gel does: sodium citrate and sodium chloride are listed in the ingredients. This is a modest amount of 0.1 gram of salt per gel, but it has a function. Sodium promotes glucose absorption via SGLT1 and maintains taste balance. During prolonged effort where you sweat a lot, it does not replace all of your sodium losses. In that case, add a HYDRO tablet or a HYDRO+ sachet to your drinking water.

The neutral flavour has the same nutritional values as the other Beta Fuel Gels. You can combine it with other flavours in your jersey or bib pocket, and alternate depending on whether you fancy fruity or neutral. For those who already have experience with gels and know that the taste will make them tired, this is the logical choice.

Why SiS Beta Fuel Gel Neutral?

40g of carbohydrates in a 1:0.8 ratio per gel

Twice as many carbohydrates as the GO Isotonic Gel (22 grams), in the same optimized 1:0.8 maltodextrin to fructose ratio. Maltodextrin goes directly to the muscles, while fructose passes through the liver. By using both transport pathways at the same time, your body absorbs more carbohydrates per hour than with a single source. Oxidation efficiency increases from 62% with a 2:1 ratio to 74% with the 1:0.8 ratio.

Contains sodium, unlike the Beta Fuel 80 sachet

The Beta Fuel 80 powder sachet does not contain sodium. Beta Fuel Gels do: through sodium citrate and sodium chloride, there is a small amount of sodium in each gel. Not enough to serve as an electrolyte replacement in cases of intense sweating, but enough to support absorption and maintain taste balance. During prolonged exertion, combine them preferably with an HYDRO tablet or an HYDRO+ sachet.

No water needed, ready to use immediately

The gel is a 60 ml liquid product, ready to squeeze directly. You don't have to dissolve or mix anything. With 1 to 3 gels per hour, you reach the recommended 80 to 120 grams of carbohydrates without a water bottle or shaker. Convenient during time trials, uphill, or in situations where you don't have a water bottle or don't want to stop to drink.

Informed Sport Certified, Gluten-Free, No Artificial Colors

All Beta Fuel Gels are tested batch by batch by Informed Sport for WADA-listed prohibited substances. No artificial colors in the formula. Gluten-free, lactose-free, wheat-free, and nut-free. Suitable for vegans.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference to GO Isotonic Energy Gel?

The GO Isotonic gel provides 22 grams of carbohydrates from a single source (maltodextrin) per 60ml gel. The Beta Fuel Gel provides 40 grams of carbohydrates from two sources in a 1:0.8 ratio per 60ml gel. The Beta Fuel Gel is intended for efforts lasting more than two hours where you need 80-120 grams per hour. The GO gel is better suited for shorter sessions or as a supplement when carbohydrate needs are lower.

Why 1:0.8 and not 2:1?

With a 2:1 maltodextrin to fructose ratio, the SGLT1 transporter in the intestine quickly becomes saturated with high intakes. The 1:0.8 ratio ensures a better distribution between the two transport pathways (SGLT1 for glucose and maltodextrin, and GLUT5 for fructose), which increases oxidation efficiency from 62% to 74%. Comparative studies have demonstrated this in a supervised cycling study. Fewer transport bottlenecks also mean less risk of gastric upset with high intakes.

How many gels per hour?

With the recommended 80 to 120 grams of carbohydrates per hour, you should aim for 2 to 3 gels per hour, one every 20 to 30 minutes. If you combine them with the Beta Fuel 80 sachet, you add up the carbohydrates. One sachet provides 80 grams, one gel 40 grams. Adjust the intake to the intensity and duration of your effort and always test this during training first, never for the first time on race day.

Should you drink water with it?

It's not mandatory; the gel functions like a liquid product without additional water. However, it's wise to continue drinking water during prolonged exercise, regardless of gels. Gels contain a small amount of sodium, but in cases of intense sweating, this is not enough to maintain your electrolyte balance. In such situations, use an HYDRO tablet or an HYDRO+ sachet in addition to the gels.

What is neutral flavor and who is it for?

The neutral variant contains no added flavors. The gel then has no particular taste. This may seem boring, but that's precisely the point: during competitions or training sessions of four, five, or six hours, fruity flavors can become tiresome. The neutral variant is a response to flavor fatigue. You can alternate it with other flavors or simply stick with neutral for the entire outing if you prefer.

How does Beta Fuel Gel compare to Maurten products?

Maurten uses hydrogel technology with a comparable carbohydrate ratio (fructose and maltodextrin) and is also isotonic. Maurten gels provide 25 grams of carbohydrates per gel (the Maurten Gel 100 provides 100 but it is larger). The Beta Fuel Gel provides 40 grams per 60 ml. In terms of formula, the similarities outweigh the differences. The price difference is significant. Per gram of carbohydrate, Beta Fuel Gel is cheaper.
