Chewing as an alternative to swallowing
Gels are liquid and are absorbed in one go. This works well for many athletes, but during prolonged effort, taste fatigue or gastric irritation from liquid sugars can occur. A chew bar requires chewing, which provides a completely different sensation. Salivary glands are stimulated, the chewing motion mentally gives the impression of eating rather than drinking, and the ingestion speed is slower. The latter can be advantageous if you want to relieve your stomach while still getting carbohydrates.
1:0.8 Ratio in Solid Form
Gels in the Beta Fuel range use maltodextrin and fructose. The chew bar uses glucose syrup and fructose syrup. The principle is the same: two carbohydrate sources with two different transport pathways in the intestine. Glucose via SGLT1 to the muscles, fructose via GLUT5 to the liver. The 1:0.8 ratio increases oxidation efficiency from 62% to 74% compared to a 2:1 ratio. 45 grams of carbohydrates per 60-gram bar.
Six Cubes per Bar, 7 Grams Each Time
The bar is pre-cut into six separate cubes. You can break the bar in advance and keep the pieces in a pocket to take them one by one. Or you open the bar and break off a piece on the go. Each cube provides approximately 7 grams of carbohydrates. For most athletes, this is enough for a 10- to 15-minute intake at a pace where you don't want to stop or spend time eating.
