Himalaya Liv.52 with Capparis spinosa and Cichorium intybus

Liv.52 is an Ayurvedic herbal supplement from Himalaya Wellness, available since 1955. The formula combines eight plant ingredients in a fixed proportion per dose. 100 tablets per bottle, recommended use 1 to 2 tablets twice a day. No artificial additives, suitable for vegetarians.

What each dose contains

Per daily dose of 4 tablets, Liv.52 contains the following ingredients: Capparis spinosa root powder (260 mg), also known as caper bush, a plant used for centuries in traditional Mediterranean and Asian medicine. Cichorium intybus seed powder (260 mg), common chicory, whose root and seed have an established place in both European and Ayurvedic tradition. Mandur bhasma (132 mg), an Ayurvedic iron oxide preparation obtained by a specific calcination process — this is a classic Ayurvedic ingredient that explains the presence of iron in the composition. Solanum nigrum (128 mg), black nightshade, a plant used in traditional Indian medicine. Terminalia arjuna bark powder (128 mg), from the bark of the Arjuna tree, one of the most common ingredients in Ayurvedic formulas. Cassia occidentalis seed powder (64 mg), aerial part of Achillea millefolium (64 mg), also known as yarrow, and whole plant powder of Tamarix gallica (64 mg).

What the ingredients do

Several plants in Liv.52 have a recognized role around the liver and digestion. Capparis spinosa (caper bush) helps improve liver activity and appetite.* Cichorium intybus (chicory) supports liver health and digestion.* Terminalia arjuna helps improve liver activity and appetite,* and Tamarix gallica helps maintain healthy liver function and supports digestion.* Achillea millefolium (yarrow) is traditionally used to support digestion.* The asterisk refers to claims for plant ingredients still under evaluation in the European database.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Mandur bhasma, and why is iron oxide listed in the composition?

Mandur bhasma is a classic Ayurvedic preparation made from iron oxide, obtained through a specific calcination process. It is one of the oldest prepared Ayurvedic components. In the Ayurvedic tradition, it holds a different status than a synthetic iron supplement. The presence of iron oxide in the list of ingredients on European packaging refers to the same ingredient. Mandur bhasma does indeed contain iron, but the quantity and bioavailability are not comparable to those of a conventional iron supplement.

What is the daily dose and how long does one bottle last?

The recommended dose is 1 to 2 tablets twice a day after meals. At a rate of 2 x 2 tablets (4 per day), 100 tablets are enough for 25 days. At a rate of 2 x 1 tablet (2 per day), they are enough for 50 days. Start with the lowest dose if you are new to the product.

Is Liv.52 suitable for vegans?

The active ingredients are entirely plant-based. However, the tablets contain magnesium salts of fatty acids (magnesium stearate) as an anti-caking agent. Magnesium stearate can be of animal or plant origin. Himalaya states that Liv.52 is suitable for vegetarians but is not specifically certified vegan. Anyone wishing to be certain of the origin of each excipient can contact Himalaya Wellness.

Can I take Liv.52 with other medications or supplements?

People taking medication should consult a doctor or pharmacist before use. This is especially true for liver medication or anticoagulants, given the nature of the herbal ingredients in the formula. Do not use if you are allergic to any of the ingredients mentioned.

Why is the daily dose 4 tablets?

The composition and dosage recommendation are based on the original Ayurvedic formula and have not changed over the past decades. At the maximum dose of 4 tablets per day, all ingredients are supplied at the level that Himalaya considers typical based on traditional use. You are free to start with the lower dose of 2 tablets per day and gradually increase it.

Liv.52 contains Solanum nigrum – isn't that toxic?

Solanum nigrum (black nightshade) does have a toxic reputation in some European contexts, but in Ayurvedic medicine, it has been used for centuries in small, controlled doses as part of herbal formulas. The dose in Liv.52 (128 mg per 4 tablets) is low and the plant raw material comes from controlled cultivation. If in doubt or if you are taking medication, it is advisable to consult a doctor.
